Pupil reading

Reading is a crucial life skill and we believe passionately that our pupils should read well.

We use phonics to teach early reading and use the Read Write Inc. scheme.  Pupils learn letter sounds, which they then apply to their reading and writing.  Please see the links to the right for more information about Read Write Inc. Phonics.

All pupils in the school take part in daily guided reading sessions where Reciprocal Reading strategies are used to support pupils to develop their reading skills.  If pupils need additional help they may also be involved in additional small group or 1 to 1 reading interventions.  Please see the links to the right for more information about guided and home/school reading.

We encourage families to support their children's reading by hearing them read their individual reading books as much as possible.  It is also important to ask questions about what they have read to ensure that children understand what they are reading and can talk about the book. If you would like help supporting your child as they learn to read please discuss this with your child's class teacher as they will be more than happy to help.
